WiseFood: Where Data Feeds Decisions

The WiseFood EU Project is a Horizon Europe-funded research and innovation initiative that leverages data science and advanced AI technologies to empower citizens to make healthier and more sustainable food choices. By combining reliable food data, personalised recommendations, and user-friendly digital tools, WiseFood aims to bridge the gap between nutritional knowledge and everyday food decisions across Europe. The project was officially launched in January 2025 and runs through 2027, uniting a multidisciplinary consortium of partners from multiple European countries.

Wisefood Project Website

At its core, WiseFood will develop three complementary AI-driven applications that support informed decision-making. FoodScholar offers an intuitive interface to explore curated food information on nutrition, health, and sustainability. RecipeWrangler helps users analyse and optimise recipes based on both nutritional value and environmental impact. FoodChat delivers personalised meal planning and recipe suggestions that prioritise health, sustainability, and reduced food waste. These tools are designed to be accessible to everyday users without requiring specialised technical expertise.

A key feature of the project is its co-creation approach through Living Labs located in Ireland, Hungary, and Slovenia, where citizens, nutrition experts, food producers, policymakers, and other stakeholders collaboratively design, test, and refine project solutions in real-life settings. This participatory process ensures the applications are practical, effective, and culturally relevant, while also aligning with national nutrition and sustainability policies.

By democratising access to trustworthy food information and facilitating behaviour change towards healthier and eco-friendly eating patterns, WiseFood seeks to contribute to broader public health goals and sustainable food systems across Europe. The project also emphasises ethical AI practices and human-in-the-loop design to ensure accuracy, relevance, and user trust in the developed solutions.

My role

My role in the WiseFood project is to ensure strict adherence to Responsible AI principles in the development and deployment of its AI-powered tools. In particular, we work to ensure that LLM-based outputs are systematically evaluated and mitigated for bias, aligned with established nutritional guidelines, and designed to be transparent and explainable to end users. Emphasis is placed on safety, reliability, and human oversight, ensuring that recommendations are trustworthy, evidence-based, and supportive of informed, healthy, and sustainable food choices.
